And oil only seems cheap. We won’t need new power plants, since we have enough off-peak electricity to recharge as many retrofits as we can build. And magically, as more electricity comes from lower-carbon fuel sources, our cars will get cleaner as they get older! But let’s realize: defending our nation is never cheap.

Revving up to that point, you get a kind of weird, whining and spinning sound that’s evocative of early vacuum cleaners. Given the cost of oil and the economic, geopolitical and ecological effects of our continued reliance on petroleum, electric transportation will be cheap. And fast charging, which will make recharging your vehicle a part of your 15-minute coffee break at Starbucks or weekly grocery run, is the key to customer acceptance of electric vehicles.

Currently only two EVs in the US are made in China, the Polestar 2 and Volvo S90 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid. But with these increased tariffs, that makes it less likely that US consumers will gain access to these cheap, high-tech Chinese EVs. Most of these tariffs go into effect this year, though some will be imposed next year.

Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCV) at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit.
