Two geoscience faculty members at The University of Montana (UM) have started a partnership with Blue Marble Biomaterials to produce commercial products from algal biomass. Our goal will be to tap into Blue Marble’s carbon dioxide waste stream and then turn that CO 2 into algal biomass. Additional strains come from soil.

The Plains CO 2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership, one of seven members of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships program, has begun collecting core samples from a new characterization well near Spectra Energy’s Fort Nelson natural gas processing plant in British Columbia, Canada.

The Rentech MOU contemplates the production and purchase of approximately 250 million gallons per year of synthetic jet fuel derived principally from coal or petroleum coke, with the resultant carbon dioxide sequestered and the carbon footprint potentially further reduced by integrating biomass as a feedstock. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 19 projects to enhance the capability to simulate, track, and evaluate the potential risks of carbon dioxide storage in geologic formations. Researchers will develop systems for tagging CO 2 with carbon-14 at atmospheric level (1 part per trillion) and measuring the carbon-14 CO 2 levels.
