Chinese automotive manufacturer BYD sold 18,220 pure-electric passenger vehicles in November, up by 22.1% November sales of plug-in hybrids passenger vehicles hit 7,333, up by 2.9% Sales of pure-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids January-November 2020 were 139,246 and 69,390, respectively, down by 19.9% from a year earlier.

In China, leading automakers BYD and Chery have announced plans to roll out their own electric models within the next two years. In March, BYD chief executive officer Wang Chuanfu announced that in the first half of 2010 the company will sell only 100 e6 cars, to a taxi company in Shenzhen. Investors, too, are excited.

Honda too has pinned its recovery hopes on green cars, pushing both hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell technology. Late last week it raised its full-year profit forecast on the hope that green stimulus efforts around the world will push consumers to offload older vehicles in favour of newer, more eco-friendly alternatives.

As reported in the NY Times, “Chinese leaders have adopted a plan aimed at turning the country into one of the leading producers of hybrid and all-electric vehicles within three years, and making it the world leader in electric cars and buses after that.” Can I charge my new EV here? The effort to get cars to market must remain our focus.

But this still doesn’t take away from a 47% EV market share, more than double 2019’s, and also a sharp shift in composition from a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) dominated island to an evenly balanced 2020 mix (yes, there are points for that too). In South America BYD seems the only E-bus act in town. Or have subsidies been cut too quickly?

In Germany, statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority reveal that total car registrations in March fell by 38% while fully electric cars actually grew by 56% and hybrids by 208%. Chinese car producer BYD even recorded a 337.25% increase in March sales amongst its fully electric and hybrid car models.
