In order to win the United States MPG crown for the 1985 through 1987 model years (for 1988, the Sprint Metro replaced the Sprint ER), the Sprint ER had a taller final drive gear ratio and a stingier camshaft than the regular Sprint. The Sprint was nowhere near the cheapest new car Americans could buy in 1987. per gallon.

The EPA 46 MPG Is Only the Start. You had me at 46 MPG. Once out of the Los Angeles area, we took CA 123 through Fillmore and Santa Paula, then headed to Ojai on CA 150 through the Topatopa Mountains. For most people this is more than they drive dally, which means they will rarely be stopping to buy gasoline.
