PRTM’s assessment, based on what it called a thorough review of the operational market dynamics, found the following: Under a “Most Probable” scenario, battery manufacturing capacity will hit a shortfall by 2016.

Greentech Media reports that lithium-ion startup Imara has ceased operations, due to a lack of funding. The company had experienced a delay in ramping up operations and could not line up investors to build a factory. The battery company, which grew out of a project at SRI started almost a decade ago, has ceased operations.

Pike Research forecasts that the global market for all electric-drive buses—including hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell buses—grow steadily over the next. The Latin American market will be driven largely by uptake in Brazil, but other countries will also spur adoption, notably Uruguay which recently indicated it.

The National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Batteries (NAATBatt) ( earlier post ) has selected a site in Hardin County, Kentucky to build a more than $600-million automotive lithium-ion battery plant. Kentucky was selected over Texas, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has approved a $5-million forgivable loan for Li-ion battery manufacturer A123 Systems contingent on its hitting job creation and private investment milestones. With the new expansion, A123 Systems will assemble and commission grid-storage battery systems in Massachusetts.
