A Bloomfield, Michigan startup is developing light- and medium-duty series plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain systems—initially as conversions, but ultimately extending to an OEM basis. Michigan-based electric powertrain company ALTe LLC ( earlier post ) revealed its demonstrator Ford F-150 range-extended electric vehicle conversion at the 2010 National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Work Truck Show and Green Truck Summit. The battery pack was assembled into a saddlebag configuration under the truck bed.

Ford began production of the 2013 C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid vehicle ( earlier post ) at Michigan Assembly in October, and the vehicles are heading for showrooms. Ford’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle on the market offers EPA-rated 108 mpg equivalent city, 92 mpge highway and 100 mpge combined;the all-electric range is up to 21 miles.

Fuel economy is said to be 29 mpg on the highway and 23 around town.
