In the Aluminum the most challenging part is going to be the battery cover, which is going to have fins. Oben is assembling their own battery packs - and it was heartening to know that they are taking the LFP route, albeit with cylindrical cells. Another idea that we discussed was using this for charging swappable batteries.

is hoping to launch the Volt in late 2010 with a price tag of about $40,000. The fuel engine on the Volt is used to run the generator to recharge the battery when a trip exceeds 40 miles, and it’s rage on a full tank is around 400 miles. Sure, it can handle most commutes on the battery, but who commutes in this?

April 10, 2009 10:09 am Link It amazes me that in the vast debate about electric cars world wide including here in Norway, no one ever mention the fact that the batteries in such cars need replacement in no more than five years. So imagine a million electric cars on US roads which all need to change these batteries in say 2015.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Former vice chairman Bob Lutz said as much a year ago.
