The operational technology has been perfected and the battery technology is maturing. The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet.

Its first model, the Tesla Roadster, was the first production car to use lithium-ion batteries and was the first electric vehicle with a range greater than 200miles. Thanks to a $528million Federal loan the company will also begin work on ‘Project NINA’ to design and assemble a second-generation saloon car for sale in 2012.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. Batteries not ready. , todays answer is "Yes -- but not yet."
