The Opel Ampera has been on sale for almost two years in Europe, and has been bought by 7,700 customers, who have driven a total of 100 million kilometers (62 million miles) on pure electric power, according to Opel. The Ampera is increasingly being driven in pure battery-powered mode, as reflected in fuel consumption figures.

The EVer (Electric Vehicle extended range) powertrain of the Fisker Karma. The company, which began deliveries of the Fisker Karma luxury four-door extended range electric sedan in December 2011, also said that it has delivered 1,000 vehicles to customers in the US and Europe. Click to enlarge.

The Ampera goes on sale in Europe in 2011, the Spark in early 2010. The Ampera is an extended range electric vehicle based on the Voltec technology used in the Chevrolet Volt. Equipped with a 16 kWh Li-ion battery pack, the five-door, four-seat hatchback has a battery-powered range of up to 60 km (37 miles) (MVEG cycle).

Balqon Corporation, an emerging developer and manufacturer of zero emissions heavy-duty electric vehicles for Class 7 and Class 8 applications ( earlier post ), introduced a lithium-ion battery powered heavy-duty electric truck designed for use in on-highway short-haul applications at the Governors’ Global Climate Summit in Los Angeles, California.

For all the fanfare, sales of electric cars are currently negligible (outside of golf courses, that is). Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. GM calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV.
