Volkswagen brought the new CrossBlue Coupé plug-in hybrid sporty mid-size SUV show car, introduced in April at Auto Shanghai 2013 ( earlier post ), to a media event in Berlin for its European premiere. The Group also is using the New Small Family (NSF) kit; the MLB (Modular longitudinal kit); and the MSB (Modular standard kit).

kWh battery is charged, there is no sound upon pressing the start button as the Escape PHEV defaults to electric mode. If it is cold outside or the battery charge is low, then the engine kicks-in, as it does under heavy acceleration (unless you’re in EV Now mode as explained below). EV Charge mode charges the battery while driving.

There is a sixth mode of Preserve, which saves the battery charge for later use. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the Corsair’s fuel economy at 33 mpg highway and combined when running in hybrid mode only. On a 68-mile run, setting the adaptive cruise control at 65 mph and after fully charging the battery, we averaged 58 mpg.

MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery.
