On December 16, 2010 the US DOE Energy Information Agency (EIA) published a report projecting that renewable energy will still only constitute 12 percent of the USA’s energy sources by 2035. Audi will introduce the compact A3 Sportback g-tron—which can be powered by the CO 2 -neutral Audi e-gas, synthetic methane generated from eco-electricity in the Audi e-gas project ( earlier post )—at the end of the year. its performance figures are identical in CNG and gasoline modes. Audi’s basic goal is to combine renewable energy (e.g. solar and wind), water and CO 2 to produce liquid or gaseous fuels with a very low carbon intensity. Audi has opened its e-gas plant in Werlte, making it the first automobile manufacturer to develop a chain of sustainable energy carriers. When one thinks about what automakers can do to help the environment, the immediate thought is about improving fuel efficiency and developing alternatives to gasoline. But there’s much more automakers can do beyond fuel efficiency to reduce our environmental impact by adopting energy efficiency and renewable energy throughout our operations.

This is particularly true in the electric power sector, where, in the US, natural gas sets the cost benchmark against which other clean power sources must compete to remove the marginal ton of CO 2. At least for the near term, that would entail facilitating energy demand reduction and displacement of some coal generation with natural gas.
