The list of powertrains (note we can’t say engines anymore) was fairly exhaustive—39 vehicles were evaluated with 18 of those electrified models. We are literally trying to reinvent the auto industry, so why go the conventional route and rework someone else’s engine? The Elio engine uses a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. There really was nothing available that combined the speed and power that we want and our customers deserve.

The alternative-fuel car evolved to reduce exhaust emissions and other problems derived from burning fossil fuels. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. The word “hybrid” is misleading.
