Last week, Elon Musk announced Tesla’s first involvement in a major housing development project in Austin, Texas. Easton Park is a 2,400-acre community southwest of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, as per the Austin Business Journal. Tesla Energy takes a stand against coal and gas generators in Australia.

The US Department of Energy is awarding $620 million for projects around the country to demonstrate advanced Smart Grid technologies and integrated systems. Smart grid regional demonstrations involving plug-in vehicles include (ranked by DOE funding): Columbus Southern Power Company (doing business as AEP Ohio).

Coal still supplies more power in the US than anything else, with natural gas next. However, building more coal and gas power plants to make miles for transport is counter-productive if the game plan is to reduce carbon output. The first eye-opener for large scale solar was the Austin Energy PPA last year that was priced at 5 cents.

We have diversified sources to meet many of our energy needs (for example, coal, nuclear power, hydroelectric and biomass). Those costs can be reduced far more if such vehicles' batteries can be charged by the electrical grid. And, on the other, we are paying vast sums to protect ourselves against such terror.

Electric cars and a smart electric grid have a bright future, according to panelists at a roundtable discussion on the subject that I attended last Friday in Boston. “I Vehicle-to-grid is, I believe, the salvation of the automotive industry in the United States,” declared Marc Spitzer, an agency commissioner who was also on the panel.

Once weve consolidated everything to depend on the grid, we can clean up everything by cleaning up the grid. Once electric cars are more common, demand for electricity will rise, and electricity producers will have to look at big generators such as dams, nuclear stations or decentralised wind turbines that feed in to the grid.
