When Clean Fleet Report first reviewed the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid in 2017, it was the only electrified minivan on the market. The Pacifica Hybrid has a regenerative braking system, which recharges the 16-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion (li-ion) battery. The Pacifica Hybrid does not have a Level 3/DC fast charger capability.

I used my solar-panel-powered Level 2 (240V) home charger, but if you’re on the road and want to top off quickly, DC fast charging at 150 kilowatts takes about 40 minutes to get you to 80 percent. For more affordable EVs, the Volvo brand has big plans to expand its lineup, and already offers the XC40 Recharge crossover.

The E-Tron has a 95 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery that can be charged via a common 120-volt household outlet that will recharge an empty battery in about 80 hours. Using a DC Fast Charger the time for 10-80% state of charge drops to 40 minutes. Most owners will install a 240-volt Level 2 charger that will cut that time to 10 hours.

When in a time crunch, you can add 10% to 80% in 18 minutes on a DC Fast Charger if charging at 350 kW. Regenerative braking, which uses the electric motors (not the brakes) to slow the car, recharges the battery when slowing or coasting, converting kinetic energy into electric energy, which is stored in the battery.
