Most current bio-jet fuels consist primarily of linear or branched chain alkanes; they suffer from low densities (~0.76 g/mL) and low volumetric heating values compared with those of petro-jet fuels. As a result, most alternative fuels have to blend with petro-jet fuels to meet the energy density requirements.

The updated trucks, which were originally purchased in September 2015, deliver up to four times the fuel economy of a gasoline-powered vehicle, UPS said. The small footprint mini-refinery, to be operated by Red Lion, is expected to produce 350,000 gallons per year of synthetic diesel with a high biomass to fuel energy conversion efficiency. Red Lion says that its thermal conversion process is approximately 70% energy efficient.
