The majority of the vehicles are electric, with a small number being plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids. Modern electric cars offer power and bucket loads of torque. The consortium will develop and demonstrate 110 road-worthy vehicles to be trialed in the two cities over 12 months, 40 of which will be smart electric vehicles.

Some of the participants in the UK Government’s electric car trial have expressed their enthusiasm at earning funding to be part of the scheme. “Smart has been conducting real-life trials of 100 electric cars with partner companies across the country since 2007,&# he said.

The UK has been an epicentre for drivers with a green conscience for many years. MINI is on the hunt for willing test drivers to drive its electric MINI cars as part of a Government-backed scheme to get electric cars on the roads. Pioneering drivers are wanted to partake in MINI E UK research project. Each MINI E will be available to lease for six months from December this year.

A UK-wide trial of electric cars has been launched. Ministers gathered at London’s Guildhall this morning to unveil the range of electric and low carbon technology vehicles to be used in the trails. The trails will take place in London and four locations around the UK - Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Oxford.
