Eight new low carbon vehicle projects will receive a share of £25 million (US$41 million) of funding from the UK’s Technology Strategy Board Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator to run ‘real-life’ trials. The majority of the vehicles are electric, with a small number being plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids.

MINI is on the hunt for willing test drivers to drive its electric MINI cars as part of a Government-backed scheme to get electric cars on the roads. Pioneering drivers are wanted to partake in MINI E UK research project. Each MINI E will be available to lease for six months from December this year.

A UK-wide trial of electric cars has been launched. Ministers gathered at London’s Guildhall this morning to unveil the range of electric and low carbon technology vehicles to be used in the trails. The trails will take place in London and four locations around the UK - Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, and Oxford.

The BMW Group released the data from the MINI E field trial in the UK. MINI E Trial in numbers. 40 MINI Es. 80,282 kWh electricity. The MINI E. The MINI E is a two-seat development of the familiar MINI Hatch, powered by a 204hp electric motor that also generates 220 N·m of torque.

Last week, Nissan announced plans to make electric car batteries at its plant in Sunderland, creating 350 new jobs in the process (see ‘ Nissan to make electric car batteries at Sunderland plant ’). It has also outlined targets for the National Grid to increase the amount of electricity that comes from purely renewable sources.
