The US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $19 million for 13 projects in traditionally fossil-fuel-producing communities across the country to support production of rare earth elements and critical minerals essential to the manufacturing of batteries, magnets, and other components important to the clean energy economy.

The magnets—and thus the rotor—follow the rotating alternating current field in the stator windings. In the EQS SUV, Mercedes-Benz uses a pull-in winding for a particularly strong magnetic field. The motor on the rear axle is particularly powerful due to its six-phase design: it has two windings with three phases each.

In contrast to conventional roundwire windings, the HVH stator winding uses precision-formed rectangular wires. Driving mostly in the Comfort or Sport modes (and refraining from depressing the Boost button too often) we returned to our starting point with a 7% battery charge.
