Rivian revamps its Illinois plant for R2 production. Rivian is rejiggering the production capacity of its plant in Normal, Illinois, to accommodate up to 155,000 of its more affordable R2 SUVs annually. Kia confirms the EV3 for production. EVs are already having a big effect on gasoline demand.

Although Rivian and Tesla are making headlines with planned expansions into mass-market electric vehicles, Kia is set to launch two affordable EVs of its own. More affordable EVs are coming Rivian unveiled its highly anticipated R2 electric SUV Thursday. One of them, the Kia EV3, is expected to launch by the end of the year.

Rivian (RIVN) is dropping a shift at its Normal, Illinois, EV manufacturing plant next month, but not because of a lack of demand. Leaked info through the company’s website shows the R2 will start at $47,000 with up to 330 miles range. Rivian will introduce its highly-anticipated R2 electric SUV on Thursday, March 7.

The Illinois-based EV manufacturer plans to use the LFP cells in its Standard battery packs and the Rivian Commercial Van (RCV) — otherwise known as the all-electric Amazon delivery van. As for Rivian’s consumer vehicles, like the R1T and R1S, LFP-based Standard battery packs are expected to provide a range of over 260 miles.
