While the Model Y dropped back from the incredible high of 5560 sales and second outright in June , it was still only beaten in the sales race by the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux utes and the cheap and cheerful MG ZS SUV. Add in 604 Model 3 sedan sales and Tesla claimed eighth overall in July with 3934 sales.

When Toyota first previewed the MR2 in 1981 as the SA-X Prototype, the whole point was to offer customers a car that was incredibly engaging to drive while also being cheap to own. An argument could be made that electrification could be used to help keep the car cheap to operate. The recipe would presumably be different for the FT-Se.

ACE-EV X1 Transformer – Australian-based start-up plans a small range of affordable EVs focused on light commercial duties. $5 Audi e-Tron GT – the BEV guts of the regular e-Tron (also shared with Porsche’s Taycan) in a coupe-inspired four-door body. More affordable EV6s will follow, but not until 2023.

The EV newcomer is largely unheard of but arrived with an affordable bang in the form of the Atto 3. It’s the first ‘affordable’ EV that’s not felt heavily compromised or compromising. The Ioniq 5 is also about half the price of the Porsche, more economical, faster accelerating and almost as quick at ultra-rapid charging.
