Although competitive Chinese automaker BYD isn’t yet slated to enter the U.S. BYD launched its Seagull, a small hatchback EV with a price tag starting at 69,800 yuan (~$9,773), at the Shanghai Auto Show last year. While the Model Y dropped back from the incredible high of 5560 sales and second outright in June , it was still only beaten in the sales race by the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux utes and the cheap and cheerful MG ZS SUV. Chinese cars sit number three behind Japan and Thailand in terms of popularity in Australia.

Pictures and first details of the all-new Renault Twingo EV have been released ahead of its 2026 debut with the French car-maker announcing that the small hatch will be reincarnated as the brand’s most affordable EV yet. 2 and at least two affordable rivals from the Hyundai and Kia. Legacy vehicles are subject to heavy taxes, but there are few affordable electric models. The lack of affordable EVs is an issue everywhere in Europe, and in the US. Auto buyers in China and India (and increasingly, smaller emerging auto markets ) have more cheap entry-level models to choose from.
