Today, a commercial operator using one backpack leaf blower for one hour generates the same smog-forming emissions as a car driving 1100 miles. Since 2018, CARB has operated the Zero-Emission Equipment Roadshow, which loans the equipment free of cost for 3 weeks to municipalities and other entities that express interest.

Lightning was one of the first to test under the newly released 2018 CARB efficiency and range validation test procedures for medium-duty vehicles, performed at the SGS Environmental Testing Center. The fuel cell uses hydrogen to charge the electric batteries for a longer-range zero-emissions fleet solution.

Deliveries will begin through certified fuel cell vehicle dealers in Los Angeles and Orange counties as well as the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento. The new Honda Clarity Fuel Cell will feature a driving range estimated to exceed 300 miles (483 km), with an anticipated refueling time of approximately three to five minutes.
