According to a new study published by the ifo Institue Center for Economic Studies (CESifo) in Germany, EVs will barely help cut CO 2 emissions in the country over the coming years, as the introduction of electric vehicles does not necessarily lead to a reduction in CO 2 emissions from road traffic given the current power generation mix.

The companies are to start using battery-electric vehicles in the logistics provider’s normal operations in a pilot phase in Stuttgart and Hamburg in early 2018. The focus will be on the economy, sustainability and practicality of tailpipe emission-free delivery vans when used for the last mile. The test started in April 2016.

The four companies agreed to conduct technical feasibility studies regarding the integration of hybrid drives developed by MTU ( earlier post ), a Rolls-Royce brand, into Coradia Lint rail vehicles and their use on routes of Dieselnetz Saxony-Anhalt, a diesel-powered rail network in Germany.

The Coradia iLint has been conducting in successful passenger service between Cuxhaven and Buxtehude since September 2018. AKASOL and Alstom are convinced that hydrogen fuel cell-based propulsion will prove to be another key driver, alongside pure electric vehicles, on the way towards an emission-free transportation system.
