Swedish automaker Volvo has rolled out its last diesel-powered vehicle, after a 45-year relationship with the powertrain and cranking out millions of diesel cars. Since 1991, Volvo made more than 9 million vehicles with diesel engines. Well, not exactly of yore , but at least it’s la fin for Volvo’s contribution.

The sixth annual analysis conducted by T&E, the European Federation for Transport and Environment, of new car CO 2 emissions in Europe ( 2011 Cars & CO 2 Report: How clean are Europe’s cars ) found that Volvo Car Corporation led the pack with a CO 2 reduction of 9%. Volvo is ranked tenth by this criteria, with an 8% gap.

Volvo trucks powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and dimethyl ether (DME) will be on display this week at the Alternative Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, North America’s largest alternative fuel and clean vehicle technology conference. When produced from biomass or biogas, DME can provide up to a 95% CO2 reduction compared with diesel.
