DARPA ] Tech Panel: In 2004, DARPA launched interest in self-driving vehicles with a Grand Challenge. Today, we have a fully driverless taxi services in San Francisco and Phoenix. Back then, none of the vehicles could even finish the course. But while rapid progress has been made, fully automated vehicles aren’t yet the norm.

Google’s technology campaign for autonomous driving

Prior to working for Google, many of the engineers were veterans of the 2004 and 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge that featured vehicles executing a route across an off road area. In 2009, Levandowski used an autonomous vehicle to deliver a pizza through the streets of San Francisco.
