South Korea did that and Australia is going to be doing that. The mines in Canada where the nickel & cadmium are mined is one of the most polluted places on Earth. We should have built more Nuclear power plants and created a nuclear waste recycling program. Instead we prop up companies that ran themselves into the ground.
