The Toyota Prius was once reviled by most enthusiasts and often the butt of jokes, even in pop culture. Prius drivers were stereotyped as left-lane camping, NPR-listening, Green Party-voting smug virtue-signalers. But it was based in one truth – the Prius might save you a lot of gas but man it was no fun to drive.

If you bought a Prius (or leased one) you likely bought it for fuel economy – or maybe because it was affordable. The Prius’s new duds make the car more attractive but it remains wedge-shaped.

Hybrid, of course, sticks something resembling a Prius beneath said Grandness. It’s a heckuva package, showing 27 mpg in both my testing and on the window sticker. The standard hybrid, with CVT and sans turbo, can manage around 33 mpg, give or take depending on front- or all-wheel drive configuration. versus 112.2

Toyota invited me to join other Chicago-area automotive journalists at one of the company’s offices in Chicago’s far western suburbs last week to sample the Crown and the redesigned Prius. In case you’ve forgotten, the Crown comes standard with all-wheel drive and is only available as a hybrid – and there is no plug-in setup.
