The University of California, Davis and the BMW Group released the largest publicly available study of electric-car users yet conducted, including more than 120 families who drove the fully electric MINI E automobile more than 1 million miles in California, New York and New Jersey from June 2009 to June 2010.

The majority of the vehicles are electric, with a small number being plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids. Part funding for the project has been requested from the regional development agency, Advantage West Midlands. Both ministers drove a MINI E electric car at the event as they announced plans to support motorists by providing help worth £2000-£5000 towards buying their first electric or plug-in hybrid car when they hit the showrooms. At least GM sent this nifty printed banner explaining all about the new J1772 industry standard recharging plug. They even had a real plug connected to their toy car on the exhibit hall. Same truth of engineers who have actually talked to real drivers is in evidence with the BMW Mini-E.

The i8 Concept features a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drive with a system output of 260 kW and a range of up to 35 km (22 miles)in all-electric mode. Used as part of a proactive driving style, this coasting mode is a way to increase the driving range even further. The battery can be fully recharged in six hours at a standard power socket.
