There are an increasing number and variety of EV models available, with more than 50 models currently available in New York, and of those models, 15 have a range of more than 200 miles and are eligible for the rebate. New rebate levels as of 30 June 2021 will be: EV Range/Price. 200 miles or more. 40 - 199 miles.

Level 2 stations provide up to 25 miles of electric range to cars for each hour they are charging. Charge Ready NY rebates can be combined with New York State’s 50% tax credit for installing charging stations. The tax credit is applied after the rebate amount received from NYSERDA.

Where it falls down is its EPA-rated range: a mere 208 miles. A pre-production XC40 Recharge I drove for an hour last October through rolling suburban hills outside New York City drew little attention, perhaps due to its muted, elegant silvery-green color and black roof. That wouldn’t provide even 200 miles of range.

The EPA rates fuel economy, when using the hybrid gasoline-only engine at 30 miles per gallon. When combining gasoline and electricity that number jumps to 84 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent).
