Keeping pace with its announced intention to roll out 10 plug-in hybrids by 2017 ( earlier post ), Mercedes-Benz introduced the new GLE550 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid (PHEV) along with the other members of the new GLE family of full-size SUVs. Kia had its Soul EV on the market and made its presence known, then added the Niro EV (and PHEV & Hybrid), but now is adding the EV6 crossover.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

The Pacifica Hybrid has a regenerative braking system, which recharges the 16-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion (li-ion) battery. So driving around town, stuck in stop-and-go rush hour highway traffic, or coasting down hills recharges the battery. The battery recharge and electric mile range are metered instantly by dash gauges.
