Leading lead battery recycler Ecobat is building its third lithium-ion battery recycling facility and its first in North America. The new facility in Casa Grande, Arizona will initially produce 10,000 estimated tons of recycled material per year, with plans to expand capacity to satisfy the increasing need to recycle lithium-ion batteries.

Toyota to Lease 200 PHEVs in Japan Starting at End of 2009, 500 Globally; Gen3 Prius Plus Li-ion Pack

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) will begin leasing approximately 200 plug-in versions of its third-generation Prius ( earlier post ) equipped with lithium-ion battery packs in Japan starting at the end of this year. This will be the first time a lithium-ion battery is to be employed in a Toyota vehicle for propulsion.

FedEx Converts 92 Delivery Trucks to Hybrids, Expanding Hybrid-Electric Fleet by 50%

The standard FedEx trucks used in the retrofit program were 2000 or 2001 models with 300,000 to 500,000 miles driven. ISB EPA 07 200-hp (149 kW) EGR diesel engine and Eaton hybrid-electric system, with Li-ion batteries for energy storage. The baseline engine for earlier FedEx hybrids was a 5.9L, 6-cylinder, 175 hp Cummins ISB.
