Bakken crude is similar to other North American light, sweet crudes and does not pose a greater risk to transport by rail than other transportation fuels, according to a study recently completed by Turner, Mason & Company for the North Dakota Petroleum Council (NDPC). The data indicated no significant changes in transit.

Marathon Oil Corporation has reached a definitive agreement with Hilcorp Resources Holdings, LP to purchase its assets in the core of the Eagle Ford shale formation in Texas in a transaction valued at $3.5 The legal advisor to Marathon for this transaction is Baker Botts and the financial advisor is Barclays Capital.

The Bakken is a prime US unconventional oil play, and is believed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, oil accumulation in the US. The tight oil is extracted in the same way as shale gas, through horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing. In the Bakken formation, the oil is extracted from tight carbonate.
