Car makers continue to update and modernise their traditional models, while the range of SUVs on offer continues to grow and appeal to all kinds of budgets and needs. Alternative Fueled Vehicles (AFVs) performed well, as electrics, hybrids and plug-ins posted an increase of 31% and recorded 450,200 registrations, making up 5.4%

SUVs were a key driver of growth in February, with the volume of vehicles registered up by 24.7% compared to the same month last year, meaning SUVs accounted for 33% of the total market in February. Demand for SUVs continued to rise, with the segment’s volume up by 24.7% in February 2018, with a total of 67,900 SUVs registered.

Poland, Slovakia, Luxembourg and Lithuania all posted record levels of volume, while it was the best year since 2007 for Spain and Estonia, and the best year since 2008 for Romania, Hungary, Croatia and Latvia. Despite growing at a slower rate than in previous years, the shift from traditional cars to SUVs continued in 2018.

The Dolphin will be available for pre-sale this summer, with deliveries in the fourth quarter, and the Seal will be available in Europe shortly thereafter, BYD said. All three models are part of BYD's Dynasty series, with the Atto 3 being the first SUV based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0, known as the Yuan Plus in China.

EEA said that one reason for the increase in car emissions is the growing share of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. Gasoline cars were the most sold passenger vehicles, constituting 59% of all new registrations (and 63% including hybrid electric vehicles (HEV)). About 38% of new car registrations were SUVs.
