The US Air Force is demonstrating the use of hydrogen as an alternate fuel source at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. This state organization supports the Hawaii ANG, the National Guard Bureau, and the US Air Force. It is tasked to demonstrate hydrogen technology and its potential applications within the Defense Department.

The project is supported by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), in cooperation with the State of Hawaii, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., On Maui, 15% of the electricity supply is already generated by renewable energy, and there are plans to increase this percentage going forward.

The PEM electrolyzer will be partially powered by renewable energy sources and is expected to be in operation in late summer or early Fall. In 2012, a Proton electrolyzer was installed at Fraunhofer ISE’s solar-powered refueling station in Freiburg as part of Baden-Württemberg''s Environment Ministry’s hydrogen refueling project.

On December 16, 2010 the US DOE Energy Information Agency (EIA) published a report projecting that renewable energy will still only constitute 12 percent of the USA’s energy sources by 2035.
