While people can purchase neighborhood electric vehicles today for about $10K, they only have a top speed of 35 miles an hour or so, essentially glorified golf-carts. In short, I came up with four options for a practical, economical EV conversion: Ford Escort 5th Gen Honda Civic ('92-'95) Geo Metro Saturn SL2 After talking with several people, I got the impression that the Honda Civic beat the other three vehicles hands-down in the selection.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. Contracts for lithium batteries for the plug-in hybrid Saturn Vue and the Chevrolet Volt have received much press. A few items before I head out to Black Rock City for two weeks.

They only have that many models because they use the same chassis and drivetrain to build 3 different cars, one branded as a Chevy, the next a Pontiac, then a Saturn, etc. So my Saturn SC1 does the job great I am getting 35-38 miles on the Hwy and with over 232,000 miles and runs like a champ.
