Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. My RAV4 EV with NiMH batteries is going strong after more than 5 years and over 50,000 miles.

Then some of the early golf-cart-esque electric LSVs that sold in California during the mid-to-late 2000s began showing up in the Pick-n-Pulls of the Golden State. These cars had NiMH batteries and were sold/leased in California from 1997 through 2002 (only fleet buyers could get them for 1997-2001).

Even so, most next gen EV manufacturers are focused on lithium ion (and to a lesser extent NiMH) as the core technology to power their cars. More often than not, the “recycling&# of NiMH or lithium-ion batteries involves shipping them off to places like China, where their fate is truly unknown.
