They are either glorified golf cart city cars like this one or they are only for the very wealthy like the Tesla. Today we could be using lead-acid EVs, lead-carbon-acid EVs, or nickel metal hydride or lithium-ion hybrids. The electricity for recharging has to come from somewhere, which means power plants.

at least, the recycling infrastructure for the well-established lead-acid batteries is robust. lead-acid batteries have a far better recycling rate than even aluminum bottles — over 90% of lead-acid batteries are recycled. None of the new electric cars are planning to use old-tech lead acid batteries.
