Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are thought to bring the best of both worlds – a large enough battery to take care of your daily tasks, paired with a gas engine for longer trips or when you can’t find a charger. For this reason, PHEVs have long been thought of as an ideal transitional technology between gas vehicles and electric ones.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) will begin leasing approximately 200 plug-in versions of its third-generation Prius ( earlier post ) equipped with lithium-ion battery packs in Japan starting at the end of this year. TMC is also considering introducing plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany.

From January 1 to June 30, 2021 an estimated 291,933 BEVs and PHEVs (plug-in electric vehicles) were purchased, roughly 30,000 below the 320,000 average for the full years of 2018-2020. This inaugural report includes an Excel file and table of actual and estimated sales of 57 EVs for Q1 and Q2 2021 which is also categorized by BEV and PHEV.

France will be the first country to participate in the three-year European pilot, with discussions ongoing in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. In the future, the PHV will be the perfect complement to Prius. The first wave of PHVs will reach Strasbourg in late 2009.

The plug-in version of the third-generation Toyota Prius will be open to leasing at the end of this year in Japan. The company is also considering introducing plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands. Action plans will be developed over the summer.
