The Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf earned the highest safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the first US crash test evaluations of plug-in electric cars. The Volt and Leaf earn the top rating of good for front, side, rear, and rollover crash protection.

New York City is adding 70 electric vehicles to its fleet: 50 new Chevrolet Volts, 10 fully electric Ford Transit Connect cargo vans, and 10 new fully electric Navistar E-star utility trucks. The Chevrolet Volt is the first electric car being used by the NYPD.

The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. Before Tesla, they were seen as nerdy golf carts, far from usable as “real cars.”

In addition to a recent electric car deal with NISSAN Motors ( NSANY ), Portland General Electric, the Oregon state governor and GE have also announced a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors ( MMTOF.PK ) to develop and sell the Miev electric car with 85 mile range by 2011. Newly installed CEO Fritz Henderson argues that pioneering projects like the Volt typically lose money until the technology catches on. "The Volt is a case study. " In other words, General Motors is going to lose its shirt until the Volt establishes itself in the marketplace. Thats short-sighted.
