When the first gasoline-electric hybrids vehicles began arriving in 1999 and 2000, early adopters did their research and were quite knowledgeable about the then-new and revolutionary transportation mode. But the mass market was confused; these new cars had an additional battery to provide electricity to an electric motor.

The team achieved rates of up to 400C and 1,000C for lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride chemistries, respectively (where a 1C rate represents a one-hour complete charge or discharge), enabling fabrication of a lithium-ion battery that can be 90% charged in 2 minutes. Most capacitors store very little energy.

The RAV4 gasoline version comes in four grades: LE, XLE, Limited and the new SE. MSRP for the 2016 RAV4 gasoline models will range from $24,350 for the LE 2WD to $32,910 for the AWD Limited. The system varies power between the gasoline engine and electric motor, or combines both as needed, all seamlessly.

Its range in purely electric mode is approximately one mile, with electric-only acceleration possible up to just over 50 mph (85 km/h). When the driver lifts off the accelerator at normal highway cruising speeds, the gasoline engine is completely switched off and disengaged from the drivetrain by a decoupling clutch.

Toyota’s hybrid system automatically switches between the electric drive mode, combined electric motor and gasoline engine and gasoline-only engine power. It features a 6-speed automatic.
