If you want to be picky, the 198 6 Sprint ER was the gas-mileage king of 1980s America, rated at 44 city and 53 highway miles per gallon. The 1987 Sprint ER came in second place, due to its insatiable thirst for go-go juice on the highway (51 miles per gallon). Just $66 with gas priced at $1.16 per gallon. It loves to run!

Last week, at the Model S unveiling in Los Angeles, Tesla revealed that an optional “ QuickCharg e &# battery would get a full charge in 45 minutes from a 480V outlet. For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. Gasoline prices change fairly rapidly.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Ive found it facinating how car commercials changed the main MPG number they promoted before gas went over $4 a gallon as city miles. Thats short-sighted.
