The basic question addressed, which appears on the study homepage (epri-reports.org) is this: How would air quality and greenhouse gas emissions be affected if significant numbers of Americans drove cars that were fueled by the power grid? The use of electricity is an important attribute of PHEVs. I truly hope we have turned a corner.

Take care of that 20% with a small, efficient gasoline engine that runs at its optimum speed. However, 70% of vehicles can apparently be fueled with no increase of electrical capacity. Here's a piece of it: Why do PHEVs reduce greenhouse pollution ? Don’t PHEVs and BEVs just shift pollution from the tailpipe to power plants ?

The Good About half our electricity comes from coal, and that will change, at best, slowly as we move to renewables. But we need to keep in mind that when we're talking about cars, even coal-generated electricity results in lower greenhouse gas emissions compared with petroleum. But not all use of coal is alike. There has never been a shortage of stories in the press denigrating plug-in electric cars. Because people naturally, logically believe electric cars are a good idea. It takes a sustained effort to sow confusion about the obvious benefits of electric cars. As electric cars seek a place in the market, expect more such stories.

But when you do, your car essentially becomes an electric vehicle with a gas-tank backup. Lifetime service costs are lower for a vehicle that is mainly electric. Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner.
