Finland-based Chempolis Oy has signed a licence and EPC (engineering, procurement, commissioning and start-up services) agreement with Tianjin Jiuqian Paper Co Ltd. to supply three formico biorefineries ( earlier post ), each capable of producing 100,000 t/a of bleached wheat straw pulp. It is a daunting question that a startup called Polar Night Energy, in the small and chilly nation of Finland (Figure 1), is attempting to answer. The system uses electricity to heat air, which is then circulated through an exchanger that heats water and distributes it to multiple buildings in the city’s Hiedanranta district (Figure 2).

The technology group Wärtsilä will supply the engines, the navigation system, and a broad scope of other products and systems for a new luxury and environmentally friendly ferry being built for the Finland based operator, Viking Line, at the Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry yard in China. There is an option for a second vessel.
