The alternative drive concept combines an electric drivetrain with a high-voltage battery and a highly efficient energy converter for the first time. The energy required for this comes from a high-voltage battery, which can be charged as required while driving via an energy converter in the form of a highly efficient TFSI engine.

Gyrodrive uses a high-speed composite flywheel paired with an innovative GKN EVO electric motor to regenerate the energy normally lost during braking. The energy is drawn from the flywheel and converted back into electricity to power the traction motor. The electricity charges the flywheel, spinning it at up to 36,000 rpm.

Italian motorsport electronics specialist Magneti Marelli and UK high-speed flywheel specialist Flybrid Systems are collaborating to develop a new energy storage solution for Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS). The energy is stored into the Flywheel Capacitor by speeding up the flywheel.
