The ship will be supplied with a system that encompasses on-board production of hydrogen gas from solar electricity, storage of hydrogen gas and two fuel cells each one 30 kW, which amounts to 80 hp in total. The Netherlands has decided to develop fossil-free ferries. The fuel cells will quadruple autonomy.

As countries transition away from fossil fuels to green sources of energy like wind and solar, there will be natural lulls in energy production due to weather conditions. Energy consumption also tends to peak during early evening hours , which is inconveniently right when solar energy output decreases.

Everybody knew then that renewables were unreliable: that wind power fully works less than one-third of the time, and that solar power is unavailable at night (of course) and less efficient on cloudy winter days. Presumably because the only forms of energy that ministers and civil servants respect are wind and solar.
