Sand is emerging as a key ingredient in the race to develop a viable electricity storage system for renewable energies. Australia-based Latent Heat Storage has developed a low cost thermal energy storage system based on the latent heat properties of silicon derived from sand.

Despite its name, Cheesecake Energy isn’t in the food business.

Doing so would give energy flexibility to a fleet owner’s business, and help better manage on-site generation such as solar power. Researchers at Harvard have demonstrated a metal-free organic–inorganic aqueous flow battery—a quinone–bromide flow battery (QBFB)—as an example of a class of energy storage materials that exploits the favorable chemical and electrochemical properties of a family of molecules known as quinones.
