The scrappage scheme is only a few days old here in the UK and it has already come under fire. An article in the New York Times criticised the so-called “cash for clunkers&# legislation that would give people vouchers worth as much as $4,500 to replace old cars with new ones. The vehicle scrappage scheme may be in full swing here in the UK, but in the United States there remain a number of questions shrouding the proposed ‘cash for guzzlers’ programme. Generally new cars must be rated with a combined economy of 22mpg and new trucks must have fuel economy of at least 18mpg.
