Clean Fleet Report got a chance to sample the model at a recent media event in San Diego. Fuel economy for the Corolla Cross Hybrid is rated at 45 mpg city/38 highway with a combined average of 42. The driving range in pure electric mode is short, so best save that battery juice for parking garages or sneaking in late at night.

Fuel economy for the Recharge is 55 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) when you use electricity and gasoline and drops to 27 mpg when you don’t charge up the battery. The EPA’s green scores on the standard 0-10 scale, where 10 is best, include a 7 for Smog, 7 for MPG the Fuel Economy score and a 9 for CO 2 on Greenhouse Gas score.

Since it was not a Level 2 charger, I knew it would not gain much juice overnight. On the last day I knew I would have to get a full charge to make it back to Heathrow and leave it with enough juice for the driver who would collect it. I duly plugged it into an exterior household outlet.

Therefore, until we get quick-charge batteries -- based on new breakthroughs, Ill take a WAG and estimate that we will have real 5-minute quick-charge batteries in perhaps 10 years -- we are likely to get our juice mostly from our home chargers. Vancouvers trolley bus fleet operates at 600 volts and god knows how many amps.
