The BMW Mini E has hit the streets. Barely one year ago, word surfaced that an electric Mini was in the works. In June about 500 cars were placed in consumer and fleet hands in Los Angeles and New York and New Jersey for what BMW calls a " field trial." It is past the time for R & D for electric cars.

The second generation of MINI, introduced in 2000, optimized the relationship between fun driving and fuel consumption, including the introduction of diesel engines. In 2008, MINI was a trailblazer for electromobility in the BMW Group. Electrified vehicles now account for 10% of MINI sales.

A UK-wide trial of electric cars has been launched. Ministers gathered at London’s Guildhall this morning to unveil the range of electric and low carbon technology vehicles to be used in the trails. Cars set to be used in the trial include the Mini E, the Mitsubishi iMiEV and the electric smart ed.

The project, which will put 340 vehicles on the road in trials within the next six to eighteen months, will be the biggest of its kind and is intended to accelerate the availability of low carbon cars to consumers. The majority of the vehicles are electric, with a small number being plug-in gasoline-electric hybrids.
