Lincoln backtracks on EVs as Ford shifts to affordable In an interview (via Detroit News ), Lincoln President Dianne Craig said that the company is “listening to what customers really need.” Meanwhile, Ford is delaying plans for a larger three-row electric SUV due to the shift.

Three other brands, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz, finished midpack. The Model X SUV remained “Much-Worse-Than-Average” for reliability, with ongoing problems including the falcon-wing doors and center display screen. Three European brands, Audi, BMW, and Mini, round out the top 10. Audi and BMW both declined from last year.

With 24,783 R1S models handed over, Rivian’s electric SUV was the seventh best-selling EV in the US. The Detroit Fire Department has been called nine times to Factory Zero since August. Porsche finally released its all-electric Macan EV earlier this year after a nearly two-year delay. Chevy’s Bolt EV was third.

Currently, Volkswagen has 5 hybrids in production—the VW Touareg, the Porsche Cayenne S, the Audi Q5, the Porsche Panamera S and the VW Jetta—with the hybrid versions of the Audi A6 and A8 on the way, Schmidt noted, adding: In Europe first we launch the two BEVs, the up! We will launch the Porsche 918 [plug-in hybrid].

Volkswagen brought the new CrossBlue Coupé plug-in hybrid sporty mid-size SUV show car, introduced in April at Auto Shanghai 2013 ( earlier post ), to a media event in Berlin for its European premiere. The Volkswagen brand is responsible for the MQB; the Audi brand for the MLB; and Porsche for the MSB (which is sporty). Earlier post.

The 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona is a Detroit anomaly: it’s a passenger car in an age of trucks and SUVs, it’s battery-electric when U.S. That gearbox may be included for the same reason as the one in the Porsche Taycan: faster acceleration from a stop while letting the electric motor operate most efficiently while cruising.

Since I was attending the Detroit Auto Show, I could replicate my UK trip for comparison. My goal was to head north to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, then west to Fargo, ND, and back to Detroit via Iowa. Currently the only other cars with an 800-volt systems are the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT.
